The museum holds an extensive collection of photographs and significant archives where history can be researched. The Chatham Islands Museum was established in 1971 in a room in the Waitangi store. With Council and community support the collections increased and in 1976 an appeal was launched for funds to build a separate museum.
Where are the Chatham Islands?Located about 500 miles east of Wellington, the Chatham Islands are about as remote as possible in New Zealand. There are about 10 islands in the group, some of which are nature reserves. The largest islands are Chatham Island and Pitt Island, which are home to around 600 people.
