Steven Konkoly: I would recommend that writers pursue both options simultaneously, but that they self-publish immediately after creating a quality product — professional cover, editing, proofing, formatting. You need to build a readership to thrive as a writer, and in playing the long game, trying to find an agent and a publisher can take years.
